Under direction of the Director of Transportation, the Mechanic III performs required automotive maintenance services on all district vehicles and other related tasks, with primary focus for the district's school bus fleet.The DistrictRichland School District encompasses the cities of Richland and West Richland. The District includes ten elementary schools, four middle schools, two senior high schools, an alternative school with grades nine through twelve, a home school partnership program, and a new fully virtual school. The District also is a partner in a regional STEM high school based in Pasco.Richland schools receive strong support from the community. The most recent operating levy in February 2018 was approved by our community with a 69% "yes" vote, and a second levy specific to instructional technology also passed. A February 2017 $98 million-dollar construction bond passed with 61.5% approval and will fund the construction of two new and two replacement elementary schools. Approximately 13,500 students attend schools in the Richland School District.
Qualifications: Education/Certification/Experience
1. High school graduate or G.E.D.2. Two (2) years of related Vo-Tech training or apprenticeship, and five (5) years' work experience as a journeyman mechanic in truck/bus field.3. Valid Washington State commercial driver's license (Class B with appropriate endorsements) or valid driver's license from another state and ability to obtain a Washington license within 6 months of hiring.4. Ability to use precision tools, i.e., micrometers.5. Ability to operate shop equipment, i.e., diagnostic testing machines, tire machine and other related equipment.6. Must be able to pass a Drug screening test.7. ASE certification preferred.Major Functions & Responsibilities1. Diagnose and maintain gasoline and diesel engines and related parts.2. Diagnose and maintain automatic transmissions.3. Diagnose, overhaul and maintain other components of vehicles, i.e., air brakes, ABS, hydraulic and air brakes, front/rear axles, power steering, compressors, electrical systems, etc.4. Must be able to diagnose electrical systems and wiring, including generators.5. Maintain suspension systems.6. Welding and fabrication skills desirable.7. Perform any other related duties, as required for maintenance and operation of all district vehicles.8. Help maintain a safe and clean work environment and maintain records and forms, prior experience with computers a plus.9. Attend any schools required to update working knowledge.10. Perform all required preventative maintenance and regular bus safety inspections.11. Must be willing to work on a service/lubrication rack as required.12. Must be able to use all shop equipment safely and proficiently, i.e., grinders, drills, air tools, lifting equipment, welders, shears, press, and other related equipment.13. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills; ability to work well with co-workers, drivers, and other district staff.14. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds assisted and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds assisted.
