United States of America - Washington, Richland Job Summary Job Summary The Scientist job family is responsible for 1) performing basic scientific analyses and calculations and 2) preparing specifications, reports and data tables. Under supervision, Scientists maintain project coordination with all other disciplines on an assigned project based on the following classification, grade, and level specific responsibilities: Under direction of the Analytical Manager or Chemist Supervisor, may perform technical assignments of various complexities within approved scientific schedules and budgets. May coordinate technical and administrative activities with employees in other disciplines and other departments participating on an assigned project. May assist in the training and evaluation of assigned scientific personnel. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control and supervision of WTCC. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS * Perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for the safety of self and other employees * Perform all work in compliance with environmental permits and regulations * Keeps the supervisor advised as to status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budget, delays and adverse conditions * Perform as subject matter expert on one or more technology areas * Assists with training technical and scientific personnel * Provides technical assistance and guidance to technical and scientific personnel * Assures quality, quantity, and completeness of the work required * Plans and schedules scientific efforts associated with assigned projects * Maintain timeliness and accuracy of oral and written technical reports regarding assigned scientific activities * Maintains proper scientific files and records * Builds productive relationships within Operations and with external work groups * Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment * This job description is not intended to include every duty, task or instruction for which an employee is responsible. Other tasks may be assigned, based on business needs and the management request SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES * May provide technical direction, training, and evaluation of assigned scientific personnel PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Laboratory Analyst/Chemist Non-Manual AECOM has joined with Bechtel to create an LLC, known as the Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) to construct, start-up and commission the world---s largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington state. The project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste currently stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct of plutonium-production during World War II and the Cold War era. The project is the largest undertaking of its kind ever and one of DOE---s most technically challenging cleanup projects---equivalent to building two nuclear power plants. Its construction site spans 65 acres and includes facilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, and high-level waste vitrification, as well as an analytical laboratory. Minimum Requirements REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or related scientific discipline from a four (4) year accredited college or university. Appropriate training and experience commensurate with the responsibilities of the position may be considered in lieu of a degree: 10 years related experience to the position and 20 semester credit hours in technical subjects related to the position OR Completion of 80 semester credit hours in technical subjects related to the position OR Successful completion of Engineer In Training (EIT) examination or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) accredited through National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) OR Professional engineer---s license Experience: 12 years experience in one or more areas of expertise including wet chemistry, elemental chemistry, or radiochemistry obtained through a combination of education and working in an environmental, research, process control, or radiological laboratory. 1 year of Nuclear Facility experience required (Nuclear Experience when used in reference to Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities, is experience acquired at any facility in which radioactive materials are routinely handled, stored, processed, or utilized.) A Bachelor of Science (BS) may be substituted for up to 3 years of nuclear experience. Demonstrated proficiency performing radiochemistry analytical methods including liquid scintillation counting, alpha spectroscopy, gamma spectroscopy, and gas proportional counting. Demonstrated proficiency performing radiochemistry sample preparation methods. Experience with actinide and other radionuclide separations is desired, but not required. Desired experience includes developing analytical methods for use in radiochemical fume hoods or hot cells, working knowledge of process control techniques, supporting continuous process operations, and familiarity with SW-846 and NQA-1 requirements as applied to laboratory operations. This position will start at the off-site lab in Pasco, and will in the future move to the On-Site Lab (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, Monday-Thursday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm.
