Job ID: 311290

Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences

Division: Biological Sciences

Group: Integrative Omics

**Job Description**

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work-life balance. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven postdocs come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!

We are seeking an outstanding Post-Doctoral candidate to join our multi-disciplinary team focused on mass spectrometry (MS) based Metabolic Flux Analysis (MFA)within the Agile BioFoundry (ABF).The ABF is a multi-national lab consortium focused on implementation of metabolic engineering strategies and efficient improvement of bioprocesses. MS in combination with tracer experiments using isotope labeled substrates can serve as a powerful tool for the modeling and analysis of intracellular metabolic fluxes. An accurate MFA is essential to understand metabolic changes of engineered bacterial and fungal strains, which will provide clues to further improve production efficiency of target compounds. In this position, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop and improve MS data acquisition using highly advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) at PNNL and to capture/interpret mass isotopomer distribution (MID) values from individual metabolites which are metabolized from a position specific isotope labeled substrates ( 13 C or 15 N). The candidate will work with others to utilize advanced capabilities such as metabolic modeling, machine-learning, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics to study the engineered microbial strains.

The selected candidate is expected to 1) Work safely and independently in a laboratory setting, 2) Conduct independent research and work on team assignments, lead manuscript development and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, 3) Interact, communicate, and problem-solve with a diverse team of research staff across PNNL, 4) Present research work at technical conferences, and 5) Participate in the development of research proposals.

**Minimum Qualifications**

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

**Preferred Qualifications**

The ideal candidate should have experience working with LC-MS and/or GC-MS data for 13 C based metabolic flux analysis. Experience on the analysis of MID values measured in biological samples from either proteogenic amino acids or intracellular metabolites will be necessary. Further experience with metabolic modeling, and utilization of -omics-based datasets (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics) is preferred.

The ideal candidate is safety-oriented, possesses good written and oral communication skills, has demonstrated an ability to collaborate effectively, has a track record of demonstrating initiative, problem-solving, independent execution of routine research tasks, demonstrated ability to publish high impact research, and ability to learn new concepts and research techniques.

PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology or related field.

**Equal Employment Opportunity**

Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital or family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information.
