Job Description:

**Organization and Job ID**

Job ID: 311889

Directorate: Energy and Environment

Division: Earth Systems Science

Group: Environmental Subsurface

**Job Description**

The Environmental Subsurface Science Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory advances fundamental scientific theory and understanding of mechanisms controlling hydrobiogeochemical processes in subsurface environments. Experimental research, high-performance computational subsurface modeling, edge computing, and machine learning enables multidisciplinary knowledge integration. This integration includes interfacial biogeochemistry coupled with geophysics to enable real-time predictive understanding and visualization of subsurface processes and systems across spatiotemporal scales. Our group provides leadership solutions for environmental remediation, sustainable subsurface energy resource identification, production, storage, and utilization (e.g., fossil energy and carbon management, geothermal energy, etc.), as well as for national security.

Successful candidates will contribute to software tool development for a number of subsurface hydrologic applications. Such applications may include employing physics based machine learning algorithms for carbon sequestration, employing optimization schemes for subsurface monitoring, and incorporating geo-based knowledge into multiphase flow reservoir simulators. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in the development of decision support software tools which represent engineered controls on subsurface processes. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to manuscripts for publication and contribute to presentations of their work both internally and externally at national conferences. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with a diverse set of research staff and project tasks, and possess the appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly articulate the objectives and outcomes of their research.

Candidates must be a PhD student in environmental engineering, hydrogeology, water resources, or a related field. The candidate must have demonstrated experience in computational hydrogeology. The candidate must also have a strong background in applied mathematics or data science. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to work well in a team setting; will exhibit a strong work ethic; will be self-motivated; and will place a high value on data quality and accuracy.

**Minimum Qualifications**

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ PhD student in technically relevant discipline (e.g., hydrogeology, water resources, or related) with experience in conceptual and computational modeling.

+ Experience applying subsurface flow and solute transport models (e.g., STOMP, TOUGH2, MODFLOW, etc.).

+ Experience in one or more programming and scripting languages (e.g., FORTRAN, PYTHON, R)

+ Experience with LINUX operating system
