Organization and Job ID Job ID: ****** Directorate: Energy & Enviroment Division: Electricity Infastructure & Building Group: Building & Connected Systems Job Description The Buildings & Connected Systems Group seeks a senior Building Energy Research Engineer with expertise in building energy simulation and modeling. This position provides the opportunity to assume a leading role supporting development, adoption, and compliance with residential and non-residential building energy codes, and the transition of energy codes from prescriptive to performance basis. This may include: use of building simulation tools, including EnergyPlus and OpenStudieo simulation software, for codes and standards development other types of energy data, engineering and economic analysis of high performance buildings. design and analysis of technology testing and demonstration experiments oversight of the development of software and simulation rulesets for rating the energy performance of buildings large-scale building energy simulation analysis using data-oriented programming / scripting languages. Analyzing proposed energy code amendments and presenting the results to impacted stakeholders The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate. Key responsibilities include the following: Level III: Contributes to the selection and development of technical approaches to building research challenges through building energy modeling,. Serves as a principal investigator on small to moderate sized projects and/or major tasks. Supports scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and execution of projects or tasks. Generates new ideas for proposals and support development of technical sections of those proposals. Demonstrate ability to acquire funding for self. Leads the development of technical products that help establish your external reputation and expertise, including technical reports, journal articles, and conference presentations. Builds external visibility through external engagement. Contributes ideas and approaches to optimize building energy research capabilities. Mentor junior staff and take on operational assignments. Level IV: Selects and develops technical approaches to complex building research challenges through building energy modeling, economic analysis, and design and analysis of technology testing and demonstration experiments. Serves as a principal investigator on multiple or complex projects or tasks. Leads scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and execution of projects, including building effective cross-disciplinary teams. Generates new ideas and leads the development of significant new project opportunities and proposals. Acquires funding for self and others. Leads the development of significant technical products, including technical reports and journal articles, and conference presentations, which are recognized by sponsors and collaborators for their technical impact. Maintains external technical visibility through leadership roles in professional societies and engagement in in national meetings. Leads cross-organizational teams to identify and promote new capabilities that advance PNNL's energy research strategy. Mentors staff and peers across the directorate. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree with 5+ years' relevant experience, Master's degree with 3+ years' experience, or Ph.D. with 1+ years' experience Preferred Qualifications Master's degree or Ph.D with in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Sciences or related field Advanced skill in building energy and control system simulation with experience using EnergyPlus, DOE2, or similar modeling software Experience using building simulation and other analytical tools to model innovative technologies and energy efficiency strategies for building HVAC, lighting, and envelope systems in residential and commercial buildings Experience developing and managing research projects including proposal writing, securing project funding, and leading technical teams. Experience applying engineering economics and cost estimating to demonstrate cost effectiveness of energy efficiency strategies Experience developing technical requirements for building energy codes or standards and/or using energy simulation for code compliance or beyond code incentive programs such as LEED or utility programs Experience in the use or development of building performance rating methods such as ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method and RESNETs Home Energy Rating System.
