Overview
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) advances the frontiers of knowledge, taking on some of the world's greatest science and technology challenges. Our research lays a foundation for innovations that advance sustainable energy through decarbonization and energy storage and enhance national security through nuclear materials and threat analyses. PNNL conducts over $1.25B in research and development annually and averages one invention every business day.
PNNL's Technology Deployment and Outreach Office is seeking undergraduate through graduate-level interns to bring new life science, security, sustainability, and energy-related technologies to market. In this role, the intern will report directly to a Senior Commercialization Manager to help evaluate new technologies, assess market potential, and develop commercialization strategies.
Responsibilities



  • Invention and technology evaluations: evaluate invention reports and new technologies for commercial viability, technical feasibility, and intellectual property considerations.


  • Market opportunity assessments: conduct market research to identify trends and potential licensees.


  • Technology transfer strategy: assist with developing commercialization plans, including go-to-market strategies, economic analysis, and lead generation.


  • Industry engagement: participate in business development and license negotiation meetings to gain market insights and technology transfer skills.


  • Critical emerging technology evaluations: assist in the assessment of technologies for dual use, export control, and emerging technology criticality assessments.


  • Research and data analytics: collect data and support data analytics to develop and establish the effectiveness of technology transfer strategies, to develop and test theories, including topics related to emerging commercialization pathways, effective methods for critical emerging technology protection and industrialization, place-based innovation and successful public-private partnerships for commercialization of technology.


  • The internship is a 10-week program and paid hourly on a full-time basis during Summer 2023 with an option to extend to part-time in Fall 2023. Start and end dates and part-time/full-time are flexible.


    In addition to the specific duties above, the Technology Commercialization Interns will be part of an active PNNL engagement program designed to provide insight across the organization, professional development, and networking opportunities. As a PNNL intern, you will discover that the experience is more than simply an internship - it is an intentional platform to launch your future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career.
    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:


    • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.


    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.


      Preferred Qualifications:


      • Currently enrolled in a PhD degree program in a related field (e.g., business, science, engineering, technology).


      • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


      • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.


      • Familiarity with data collection and summarization.


      • Proficient in using Excel and PowerPoint.


      • Familiarity with online collaboration tools, such as Wikis or Microsoft Teams.

        Intern will be required to travel once to lab in Richland, Washington.
